Challenge #1: 7 Days of Clean Eating

While I've still got the fire of motivation burning within me, I figured I'd better start a 7-day challenge, and stat. Because I'm trying to provoke a lifestyle change with these challenges, I wanted to start with a diet change that isn't TOO drastically different from what I'm used to, which is why I decided to start with a "clean eating" challenge.

"Clean eating" can be defined in many different ways, but for this particular challenge, I'm going to abide by these particular guidelines:

1. No processed cane sugar (which includes granulated, brown, and confectioner's sugar, as well as any sugar under a different name, like high fructose corn syrup). Natural sweeteners like honey and 100% natural fruit  juices are acceptable.

2. Any food bought from a store or other vendor must have an entirely recognizable ingredients list. In other words, no foods with preservatives, additives, scientific-sounding compounds, etc. (Also, it is preferable if the ingredients list can be kept at 5 items or fewer.)

3. All grains must be 100% whole wheat.

4. Meat must consist of lean cuts and minimal processing (aka, chicken and fish are okay, meats like bacon, sausage, and most lunchmeats are not).

Basically, I'm going to try and fill my plate this week with foods that are close to their natural state, have mostly been prepared by me (or by another human I know), and that are free from sugar.

I will allow myself one cheat meal, which includes one small sugar treat.

In case you're curious, I've assembled a pin board on Pinterest of meals I intend to make (and any adjustments I'll need to make to them). If you want to see that board, follow this link.

I will post on my progress in one week (yikes!).

I'd love it if you'd like to join me! Also, I'm open to the sharing of any clean eating posts, ideas, and recipes---so send 'em on over!

  2. I'm totally gonna do this with you! I'm pretty good about clean eating for my actual meals, but I'm always eating sugary sweets. I'm excited to try this and see how it changes the way I feel!

  3. Good Luck! It's almost scary when you start reading the labels on food in the store. I've started making my own cereal, granola, and snacks because it's nearly impossible to find a healthy option.

Try Agave Nectar as a sweetener! It's yummy and natural.

    Good luck!

    2. If you are tempted to go vegan (or try it out) buy the "Oh She Glows" cookbook OR check out her website for free recipes. I have made nearly everything in her cookbook and it was amazing and healthy!

  4. I love the Oh She Glows blog. I tend to be about 80% consistent with clean eating, but like someone else mentioned, I have trouble with sweets. I tend to make compromises there that I'm not willing to make with my meals. I try to buy good chocolate with few ingredients, but it's a little harder to find a little more expensive, and sometimes I just don't care like I should. I have put on about 10 pounds in the last 6 months because I've just gotten complacent, and even though I'm eating healthy foods the majority of the time, too much of those foods can still pack on pounds! Thanks for the inspiration to get back on track!

    1. Ashley, we have a lot in common! I feel like I eat pretty well most of the time, but sweets are my downfall (and I, too, have gotten complacent over the past several months!). I have started following the Oh She Glows blog, and I love what I've seen so far! My readers are always so good to steer me in the right direction :)
